So i havent been writing here for a while, i just noticed that my new years resolution was to write more often in my dead blog but i havent (shame on me!). I have been thinking alot lately, i have been really nostalgic towards me being here (probably staying for my last 2 months). Scholarships for PHds are harder to obtain than i thought! im probably moving back home and try to leave to the US or Canada, pretty much wherever i get accepted now!! wish me luck

Two years or so have passed since i moved from Guate. and i think that i have finally started living my life again, from what i was doing 3 years ago or 4 years ago. I have noticed that those years werent that great, i tried to live a life that wasnt for me and it was only to gain acceptance. The person i was trying to win her acceptance left me in the end, with no reason what so ever. I was totally devastated after that time and nothing was quite the same again. Since i came here i noticed tons of changes in me. First, i started living, seeing life in a 180 degrees perspective. I did not want to be that person ever again. It was hard at first, i was never used to do all these things by myself, it got hard at times. Even in hardcore, my life, was sooo blurry. THats when the biggest change in my life came and i left straight edge. Now when i look back i think it was the dumbest decision in my life, but it happened. I have to say i had some months were i wasnt my self, im back in my way... saying that im pretty much edge now but im not edge. I will never call myself edge again because ive betrayed the straight edge, i would never give it a bad name after what i did and lived!
Either way, im at that point when i dont want days to pass by because im still waiting for two scholarhips, what might the outcome be? who knows, but i rather think that im not getting it that way i can be surprised if i do. Nonetheless, im nervous about that and nervous about going back home!
The few times ive been home it has been weird, i dont know that much people as i knew before. Guatemala seems soo difffernet from what im used to know. What will i do once im there, living with my parents again? its quite out of the question.... but i need money to survive, so i need a job...... lots of questions going through my head now!
i really just wish i could stay and finish my pHD, its my lifes dream! but yet again i still have to wait!
i just wanted to write what was on my mind!

one year for 2012

So 2011 is finally here!
actually its been here for a while (almost a month already)......, but, i havent had any time lately! Things are looking pretty pretty preeetty good this year. Im very happy in the laboratory im doing research at and classes are quite enjoyful and going good. I surely had a great time back home, saw all my old time buddies and had a large amount of time to relax. I still dont know if this will be my last year in Spain, im currently filling papers for three phd grants.... obviously if i get one ill stay.... if not ill probably go back home.

I was looking into the possibility of moving to the USA (ive always loved it and it would rule), bought a GRE book to start studying! i have to say...... it looks quite hard but..... thats my second option as for now.
My third option is to apply once again to the Max Planck Institute, (its pretty much the reason why im doing a second masters anyway)..... so lets see how that goes, if not ill just return home i guess.........
i really do not believe in luck nor destiny, so ill let the people in charge of this institutions decide my life .

Im still the same old guy, Nothing´s changed in this months ive been off this shit!, i really do not know if people still follow this...... but still i find great relief in just writing stuff, plus im waiting 10 minutes to leave for class!

Anywho, ill try to post once a week or twice a week, heck that can be my new years resolution!

perspectives of hardcore (from a latin american point of view)

Ultimamente he estado leyendo muchos libros en mi tiempo libre. Me empezo a intrigar como los ojos siempre estan puestos a las escenas de USA y Europea. Latinoamerica ha tenido muchas bandas buenas y gente con ideas muy buenas a lo largo del año. La escena latinoamericana parece ser siempre olvidada, como lo ha sido a todo nivel (politico, economico, etc).

Este proyecto tiene como nombre "perspectivas del jarkor: desde el punto de vista latinoamericano", busco documentar ideas de como el hardcore cambio la vida de distintas personas en distintos paises, bajo distintos estilos de vida y como algo puede reunir a estas personas como una. Como cambio si vida cotidiana y como la enfrentan dia a dia. Tratare de documentar la historia de como empezo todo en cada uno de los paises en el cual me enfocare, principalmente aquellos en los cuales he tenido amigos y que conozco.

No sera facil, pero seguro tendre el apoyo de gente apasionada por el tema!

Lately ive been reading alot of books in my spare time. I was beggining to be intrigued how the eyes are always put at US and European scenes. Latin america has had tons of great bands and amazing people who have had great ideas, views and have worked hard on starting a scene in there local hometown. My mind was inspired to start a project called "perspectivas del jarkor: desde el punto de vista de un latinoamericano". My idea is to document how hardcore has changed peoples lives in latinamerica. How they stand today from their original ideas. This will try to have a history of hardcore as well. Ill try to cover most of the latin american countries i know that have had a scene, but mostly countries where i have had friends for years!

this will not be easy but i will definetely have the support of people who are true to the core!

This is a personal statement on how i want you to know why im not straight edge anymore! Many people are gonna be offended and i dont even know why. I believe straight edge is a personal commitment, a bond you do with yourself, a personal choice.

Ive seen alot of people come and go in between the years, i made fun, i criticized, and i never thought i was gonna be the one walking through that door in the end.

The thing is that i still love straight edge, hardcore and everything. I ve been straight edge for a while and i was just seeing so many things all around i did not agreed with. Straight edge has become something different from what i used to know.... lots of people take the name in the wrong ways and they dont do it for the substance its supposed to be done. FIrstly when i went to Guatemala back in december 09 i was so dissapointed when a group of "straight edge" kids beat up my friends. (2 of them had broken noses and had to get operated inmediately), seeing what i have seen grown, with effort, energy, happiness, sadness, and whatever was being destroyed. Not to say the least when i got to barcelona i never felt welcomed in the str8 edge scene.....

I was looking at a constant elite being created, how if you werent into the "bands" , if you werent wearing what you had to wear, and following a movement!

im tired of this, tired of not being an individual..... yes, its a positive choice (the best you can make) but i guess my ride has come to an end.

If this actually brings a barrier between you and me im sad to see it..

im only human as anyone else, and this is my choice.

I havent been straight edge for a while, but i thought i had to comment on it for those who did not know!

The story of my life: (why i love music)

THe Store of my life!

WHy i love music?

I remember since i was a little child 4 years old maybe? I had a 7” of He-man Masters of the universe! I can imagine the record in my head as it was back then (around 88, the best era in hardcore) and how i listen to it every single day with my brother. I remember that my mother used to listen to music all the time, from what I can recall is the beatles, scott mckenzie, little eva, and the list goes on and on. Now that I think about it, I really don’t know when my mom stopped listening to all this music. Back when I was young my brother was my ally in everything. My brother and i grew up in a catholic environment. I remember that almost everything was considered to be a sin in my house, I was always prohibited to do a lot of stuff and I grew up with a lot of fear since I did not want to disappoint my parents. At the age of 8, my brother introduced me to some bands he had listened to in school. Some of this where: Metallica (instantly made me want to play drums), Nirvana (the band that changed my life) and guns n roses. I remember listening to electric guitars, fast riffs, and plain noise. In seconds I fell in love with music, there is so much you can express with it. Hell if you feel sad you can write a song that will express your sadness to anyone that’s hearing it or happiness or whatever emotion. I thought this was inspiring.

I remember my parents took me to the record store to buy my first CD ever. This was exciting, (back then CDs came with a cartboard box on the outside). This first record blew my mind away. Nirvana “nevermind”, this is still one of my favorite records ever. When I heard this I felt how anger and dissapointment could be expressed instantly. Ever since I was a little child I questioned a lot of things, I have always disagreed with everything. I might say im the black sheep of my whole family. I did not grew to be what they expected to be, but I guess I did pretty ok. After this I was so inspired by this whole “alternative/grunge “ era. I never knew it was pretty much punk rock. But anyways as I grew older I acquired more and more records. My taste in music changed since I was blown away by the DIY hardcore punk community. I started to preach my thoughts in bands, fanzines . I remember that everyday the only thing that made me happy was getting home from school and listen to my cds. Music gave me spirit, strength and ideas.

As I grew up I met different people that I believe taught me the most valuable lessons in my life. I learned a lot about hardcore and punk rock since the age of 10. I learned that you can question authority and practically enjoy doing what you like by reading lyrics that weren’t the classic “I love you song”. Fuck I remember bands that sounded so rough and old and they screamed their lungs out. This made me feel alive, back then growing up in a “prep school” where everybody wanted to be the perfect young rich kid, I was the other side of the coin. I was vegetarian since age 14, everyone didn’t understood me then ( I think they still don’t), and thought I was weird. Their thoughts made me want to be more weird, to tell you the truth I never like to fit molds, I like to do things my way.

What I would like to leave with this post is that my ideas, my inspiration, the way I act is pretty much based on the morals I learned through the hardcore punk community. Hardcore is more than music, hardcore is a way of living and a way of acting for yourself. Nowadays I enjoy all types of music, but nevertheless I will truly love what built me as a person today.

Live the life you love, love the life you live.

I remember when i was about 9-10 years old, i saw this video called the year that punk broke. By the time i was so in love with what alternative rock (which by the way was actually punk rock) nirvana, the breeders, pixies, lemonheads, lunachicks, etc etc- ; i remember watching this video and seeing this band "SONIC YOUTH" which i never had heard before.... but i was inmediately in love with the band! ive never heard a band so interesting! the deliberate noise in songs , the tranquility, all the mixes of sounds. THis band had it all!

Since then ive loved this band so much! i had the pleasure of seeing them live and it brought soooo many memories of me growing up!

so i have come to the point where im gonna stop complaining. I actually learned alot through this couple of weeks: how im growing up, how i dont have to fullfill no one elses expeculations nor expectatives. And how i have to live my life giving my best every single day... as if it was my last.
Why? cuz i love my life!
Its funny how the name of my blog is "my life.... my own way".. and how i just simply lost touch with my inner peace and thoughts.
YEah i do things the way i like..

i remembered my time at the last TFS show (2008 october) in maryland. I was really feeling down.. and i remember how Stephen (singer) gave a speach about life:

"theres something thats been on my mind...... all the people inside this room.... all of us are mortal.... all of us are going to die...and that sounds pretty morbid...

We go out through out living our lives as if we are gonna die in 80 years or 50 years....or 7 years....but thats the most unsure thing in this entire world......

The point to all of this.....the point to this song... is that you have to do something good with your life....you cant waste it... you cant waste it for a second....or a minute..... you cant think of when im tired, or when will i get married.... or when im happy...or whatever.... you have to do it now!

this life is precious ... and i wish that in every single one of you ...

Lately ive been going through a difficult time in my life.... see, things are not going the way i want them to go!
Anxiety and boredom are becoming a part of me!.... boredom? yeah, i feel that my life has becomed monotonous just the way as it was back home! everyone keeps asking: "dude youre in barcelona, shouldnt you be enjoying yourself? , youre on the other part of the world...."
YEah i know that.... and im forever greatful with life... for i have lived, traveled, experienced, and done lots of things most people just dream about....
But im in a time when everything just keeps freaking me out. Getting old, having different responsibilites, missing the shit out of my friends and family.... they all mix up and play with my day feelings.
Its hard to have left my life (25 years of what i was accostumed) and having a new different life.
Trying to know new people (which is hard), not feeling myself most of the time... it dissapoints me.
Why am i with all this emotional bullshit? well, i have always been emotional about my life....

Pues he dejado esto un poco al aire, ultimamente he estado estudiando bastante en todo momento. Estar en una ciudad como esta te cansa y te quedas sin tiempo (siempre hay que hacer). Pues cosas nuevas, me han aceptado para seguir el doctorado aca en Barcelona. Lo estare realizando en Cancer de niños, "neuroblastoma", una forma de cancer bastante agresiva y que afecta a los niños desde antes que nazca. Me complace hacer esto debido a que en la vida debes encontrar algo que te motive y mas si estas trabajando o te dedicaras a trabajar por otras personas. En este mundo hay mucha gente egoista, yo creo que si das la vida de recompensara.

En otras noticias, estare hiendo a un par de conciertos pronto y estare posteando aca mi critica de cada uno. Entre estos voy a ir a ver a Melvins (no me pienso perder esto).

Algo mas, pues me volvi loco comprando cosas para mi cuarto! la verdad, yo soy muy de estar en mi cuarto! (asi era en guatemala) aca no me acostumbraba del todo! asi que decidi invertir un poco.!

Bueno empieza un nuevo capitulo en mi vida, al principio fue difícil dejar mi casa, mi familia, mis amigos, todo lo que fui por 25 años. Ahora me encuentro en Barcelona estudiando, espero conocer nuevas caras, nuevas experiencias, y poder llenar este capitulo de mi vida como uno de los mejores que he vivido. Cierro esto diciendo: "vive el día de hoy, no vivas nunca en el pasado o en que será mañana, por que te perderás buenos momentos!"

Debido a que la otra semana (28 de Agosto de 2009) toca Fuerza X y como estoy enfermo, sin nada que hacer he decidido hacer esta reseña. No se de vos pero yo soy un amante de la historia del punk, sea de donde sea me gusta conocer lo que estoy viviendo. De que te sirve escuchar las bandas de hoy en día si no conoces como surgió todo??? En lo personal no soy fan de la gente que es straight edge y no sabe kien es minor threat, o gente que piensa que solo sex pistols creo la escena punk. A mi me gusta llegar al núcleo de las cosas y por esto decidí escribir esto, ya que hay gente en Guatemala que talves nunca supo de esta banda.

Por ahí del 96-98 hubo un gran boom de bandas punk en Guatemala (fue la misma época en el ke el skate fue iniciando en Guatemala). Entre esos tiempos existió: Bombardero (la primera banda que empezó a tocar hardcore), Hardflip (antes de cambiar de cantante y llamarse Enemy), Domestic fool, SI, Skunx, entre otros. En esta época los conciertos se hacían en los skate contests que realizaba la gente del guacamole team (gente de fishside skate shops hoy en día), la mayoría de gente interesada por esta subcultura eran los patinetos. Recuerdo que habían conciertos todos los miércoles en lo que se conocía como Savoy (antes de que se volviera "choooolero") y era ya algo semanal, toda la gente que conocíamos llegaba a los conciertos y eran alegres. En 1998 la famosa banda de punk argentino 2 minutos toco en "blue moon", esto para toda la escena fue algo increible; quien se esperaba que una banda que a todos nos gustaba (bombardero hacía muchos covers de esta banda y todos cantaban) viniera a Guatemala un país desconocido sin escena......

A finales del 98 todo murió de repente, la gente patineta le dejo de interesar el punk y no entiendo por que pero la mayoría de bandas dejo de tocar por que ya nadie hacía conciertos en la ciudad de Guatemala.

Fuerza X empezó en Marzo de 1999, la escena de punk, hardcore,etc.. en esa época era casi inexistente. Se formó como una nueva propuesta por Ándres (ex sangre joven y ex rivalidad) y Diego (ex eterna convicción, ex crucial, siempre adelante) como algo nuevo y positivo. Ambos estábamos interesados por el straight edge y otro tipo de música (más rápido y agresivo). Con solo 15 años de edad dimos un intento al hardcore. Principiando grabamos un demo (el cual sólo ándres creo que tiene) donde teníamos 5 canciones, que para ser sincero siendo tan pequeños no sonaban tan mal. Empezamos a movernos y realizar conciertos, la mayoría eran en el geminis 10 en el sotano (no recuerdo el nombre). La gente no entendía ni tenía la menor idea de por que utilizabamos Xs en las manos, los shows eran chistosos.

Posteriormente ese mismo año se metío a la banda Nito Baeza (celebre de mojarras) y empezamos a tocar de lleno. Para bajistas hubieron varios cambios (hasta toco guatex de hablan por la espalda Uruguay) hasta que nos decidimos por Coque bajista de Bombardero (fiel sxe de corazón).

Nosotros siempre nos basamos en la etica Hazlo tu mismo, y desde ya empezamos a contactar gente en la internet: tratando de decir y gritar al mundo "ESTAMOS AKI". Con esto nos empezaron a llegar nuevas y buenas propuestas, entre estas un correo de Robert de Commitment Records. El queria realizar un compilado con bandas de sxe mundial, La propuesta llevaría por nombre "More than the x On Our Hands". A esta edad no podiamos creer que tan buena oportunidad llegará a nuestras puertas y la tomamos inmediatamente........

Aca grabamos la canción Hazlo tu mismo. La compilación consta de 5 7" pulgadas en vynilo. En esta epoca eramos muy pequeños y la unica forma que podiamos hacer nuestras grabaciones era haciendolas nosotros mismos.

Posteriormente conseguimos la compilación "South America in Decline" un LP por Six week records, donde estuvo la cancion "Carne es muerte " Descarga aca esta canción. Fue grabada por nosotros en la casa de Nito.

Ese mismo año Maximum Rock and Roll (el zine mas grande de punk a nivel mundial y el mejor a mi criterio) estaba realizando una edición de Hardcore punk latinoamericano y gracias a Martin (los crudos, limp wrist y Lengua armada records), se nos dio la oportunidad de salir en esta edición.

Posteriormente Ändres decide dejar la banda para formar Sangre Joven y quedamos sin vocalista. Por lo que richi (amigo de varios años) empezó a cantar en la banda.

Entre otras oportunidades surgío una nueva compilación hecha por el cantante de la banda de thrash de boston Melee. Este fue un 7 pulgadas llamado "Destroy all Borders". Aca aparecío la canción Forma de Pensar. la cual grabamos en mi casa.

Posteriormente se nos dio la oportunidad de realizar una gira a USA gracias a Max Ward de 625 productions (Spazz, whn?, scholastic deth, entre otras bandas) y Gen de Ruido. En esta gira pudimos tocar con bandas como Lifes halt, Tear it up,In control , entre otras.... Logramos grabar nuestras canciones en un estudio profesional "dutch oven" por Craig de What happens Next.

DESCARGA ACAEn esta grabación canta Chato (ex bombardero) quien nos ayudo en ambas giras a USA.
Estas son las ultimas canciones que grabamos (posteriormente grabamos otras 4 canciones las cuales subire algun dia), estas sirvieron para lo último que hicimos como banda.

Max 625 nos pidió 2 canciones para Barbaric thrash demolition. "juntos en el pit" y "hablando sin conocer".

Martin de Lengua Armada nos invito a participar en el LP HIsteria 2 (todavia tengo 5 LPS si quieren uno apartenlo o comprenlo en el show!). Aca aparece "punk es mi vida", "No es cierto" y "pruebas sin sentidos".

Luego de haber realizado una gira exhaustiva por Usa en el 2002 (de 1 mes y medio, tocamos mas de 25 shows). Yo decidí que estaba ya cansado de esta banda y a principios de 2003 tocamos nuestro ultimo concierto. Toda la gente de esta banda paso a formar parte de nuevas ideas, nuevas bandas y hubo crecimiento en la escena. Se formaron bandas como Sangre joven, Eterna Conviccion, Crucial, Nota suicida, Siempre Adelante, Rivalidad, Venganza. Una sola banda ayudo a el crecimiento de la escena de guatemala. Lo que fue un pequeño esfuerzo genero tanto en tan poco tiempo. El straight edge en Guatemala era inexistente antes del año 99, Ahora en el 2009 (diez años después) miramos a gente con X.s en las manos en los conciertos locales. La idea se expandió y eso es lo importante ya que eso era lo que quisimos en un principio.

La verdad espero ver a todos los amigos antiguos en este concierto, ya que es revivir momentos, nuestros recuerdos.
Como lo decía una canción de Fuerza X:

OINK??? ke es esto?? si como lo escuchaste, en Guatemala por ahi de los 02's existio una banda ke se llamaba xOINKx. Talves nunca supiste que existio, ni que existia una banda con nombre tan malo! En este demo que daba por perdido encontraras frases como "somos los chikitos de la escena" , "aki no hay enemigos solo gente ke nos cae mal" y la mas celebre "zapatitos finos , ropa cara... son una mierda".... El dia de hoy decidi hacer esta reseña sobre como probablemente empezo la escena "punk" en Guatemala. El hardcore-punk me ha llamado la atencion por varios años ya.. (empeze a escucharlo en el año 93 para ser exacto), no soy una persona ke lleva un año en esto, ni dos ni tres... mas de 15 años. Digo esto por que hoy en dia hay mucha gente dentro de la escena que entra por las razones equivocadas y para serte sincero a vos que estas leyendo esto; yo no estoy en esto por que me hace ver rudo, distinto,etc..... simplemente por que siempre me ha gustado. Si me miras aca escribiendo esto es por que si toco en una banda, llego a los conciertos, hablo en mi blog, es por que lo hago de corazon!

Pero bueno, alrededor del 2001 cuando tocaba en Fuerza X (por alguna razon, tenia muchos contactos a nivel mundial teniendo solo 17 años) me tope con un correo de Jack Vaughn. Esto me parecio lo mas raro del mundo.... decia Guatemala Punk in the 90`s. Aparentemente habia leido una reseña que habia hecho de Guatemala en el fanzine Scorpion del 00. El correo empezaba diciendo "Asi es como empezo la escena en Guatemala". De lo que me recuerdo es que el y otros amigos estudiaban en el Colegio Maya (es una escuela que reune a gente extranjera y la mayoria son hijos de embajadores de otros paises), les gustaba mucho la escena Dischord (rites of spring, fugazi, etc) debido a que eran originarios de DC. En el año 90 hicieron una banda que se llamo Section 7, grabaron un 7" en dideca. La musica no es lo mejor del mundo, no cantan y es bastante mala, pero es algo importante ya que fue plasmado en vinilo (Para mi suerte lo tengo yo en mi coleccion). Algo destacable es que tenian una disquera llamada THIRD WORLD UNDERGROUND, si no estoy mal tuvieron 5 releases, de esos tengo dos yo!

Aca lo virgo es que se puede leer Maxtone (esa marca de baterias es clasica, usualmente es la primera bateria de todos MAGNO REPRESENT!)

Posteriormente en el año 92-93 volvio a hacer una banda que se llamaba Reagans colon surgery. Esta tiene un poco mas de sonido punk, el cassete en si no es malo. Me recuerda a Nirvana/sex pistols a veces. Interesante propuesta con saxofon en algunas canciones. Los conciertos los hacian en Sherlocks Home el cual quedaba en la Avenida Las Americas (este lugar lo destrozaron aproximadamente por el 95), y cerca a Roller circus (lo que ahora es plaza taco bell). Dicen que en un concierto que hubo en el colegio Aleman en el 93 se hizo el primer stage dive en Guatemala (ojala hubiera evidencia haha).

Asi que en dos semanas estare por las viejas ciudades deserticas de California (si antes era un desierto, ahora es una masa de cemento)..... Honestamente no me gusta Los angeles... pero es un festival y visitare amigos.
Tengo ya 4 años de no asistir a un festival desde los viejos Posi Numbers (04 y 05) para mi fue fenomenal. Quiero ver si Sound and fury le da a los talones o no a Posi Numbers.
En general ya he visto muchas reuniones, (Bold, Insted, A chorus of disaproval, Underdog) y ahora se viene FLOORPUNCH!
No aguanto por escuchar temas o mejor dicho himnos de los noventa! :)

En otras noticias, fui a ver la nueva de harry potter y e de decir que esta OK, la verdad la trama esta regular... aunke la pelicula esta muy bien hecha!

Aun tengo a la venta discos de Truth through fight, cinder, goodfellaz! (escriban aca si kieren algo)....
Siempre adelante termino su grabacion, estaremos editando un cd que estara para centroamerica.... el 7 pulgadas saldra mas tarde en el año.....
